This page was thrown together quickly to provide some info about what we are doing these days. As an aside, the page with info on the UCSD written exam is here.

At this point, we are recruiting:

  • undergraduates
  • graduate students

Some press releases

CMS

This is where the focus is going now. Between 2004-2007, our focus was primarily on CMS computing, while doing physics only on CDF, where there was data. As we got closer to LHC data taking this has changed.

Professors Yagil and Wuerthwein work closely with Claudio Campagnari's group at UCSB, and Kevin Burkett and Lothar Bauerdick's group at FNAL. At UCSD, our physics effort includes 5 graduate students, 5 post-docs, and two faculty as of February 2012.

CMS physics publications from our group on the 2012 data

At this point we have the following public results out.

CMS physics publications from our group on the 2011 data

The total integrated luminosity in 2011 was 4.7/fb as compared to 0.036/fb in 2010. The 2011 data taking period thus saw more than a x100 increase in luminosity. As of February 2012, the analyses are coming out of the approval process one after the other. We expect them to become public by mid march. I'll add in the links to the preprints as they become public.

CMS physics publications from our group on the 2010 data

During the first year (2010) of data taking with the LHC, our focus is on physics with dileptons. This lead to the following publications:

Our standard acknowledgements

The computational resources required for this work were accessed via the GlideinWMS? \citep{Sfiligoi2009} on the Open Science Grid \citep{Pordes2008}.

Some of the science publications that cite or acknowledge use of our computing infrastructure

Open Science Grid Computing

Our group is heavily involved in the Open Science Grid (OSG), a nationwide distributed computing effort aimed at providing Grid computing to the scietific community.

CMS heavily relies on OSG for its computing needs, so a lot of effort is shared between the two.

In this section we present only information that is OSG specific and may not have direct, short term use in CMS.

People active on OSG computing:

  • Brendan Dennis (Computing Staff)
  • Jeffrey Dost (Computing Staff)
  • Edgar Fajardo (Computing Staff)
  • Terrence Martin (Computing Staff)
  • Sanjay Padhi (Researcher)
  • Frank Wuerthwein (faculty)

People that contributed in the past:

  • Amir Eibagi (undergraduate)
  • Jose Antonio Coarasa Perez (Computing Staff)
  • Rami Vanguri (undergraduate)
  • Christopher Theissen (undergraduate)
  • Warren Andrews (graduate)
  • Amer Sinha (undergraduate)
  • Alison McCrea? (Computing Staff)
  • Timothy Mortensen (Computing Staff)
  • Haifeng Pi (Researcher)
  • Igor Sfiligoi (Computing Staff)
  • Alex Georges (Computing Staff)
  • Daniel Klein (graduate)

Roles in OSG:

  • Member of the Executive Team (Frank Wuerthwein)

Major subtasks:

  • Running a glideinWMS factory for OSG (Jeffrey Dost, Brendan Dennis)
  • OSG Software group (Edgar Fajardo)

While OSG usually does not develop software, the OSG scalability etc. work required tools that were not readily available, so new tools have to be developped.

The tools are hosted on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/osgscal/.

Publications:

  • Using Condor glideins for distributed testing of network-facing services (IWHGA2010 - Preprint)

CorralWMS

Our group was also involved in the development of Grid Workload Management Systems (WMS). This project ended in 2013.

The R&D effort was oriented toward the development of CorralWMS, an integration of glideinWMS and Corral. The effort was a collaboration of UCSD, Fermilab and ISI.

People that contributed to CorralWMS? :

  • Alison McCrea? (undergraduate)
  • Miguel Alatorre (undergraduate)
  • Eli Moskowitz (undergraduate)
  • Ian McNeil? (graduate)
  • Igor Sfiligoi (Computing Staff)
  • Frank Wuerthwein (faculty)
  • Amir Eibagi (undergraduate)
  • Benjamin Christian Boynton (undergraduate)
  • Chris Murphy (graduate)
  • Jaehyeok Yoo (graduate)
  • Tim Kang (undergraduate)
  • Tony Myers (undergraduate)
  • Robert Chen (undergraduate)
  • Eliskhan Sheripon (undergraduate)

JavascriptRRD?

Our group has developped, and is maintaining, a Javascript-based library for reading an plotting RRD databases.

The package is hosted on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/javascriptrrd/.

It is currently being used in glideinWMS and CorralWMS? (see above).

People involved from our group:

  • Alison McCrea? (undergraduate)
  • Igor Sfiligoi (Computing Staff)
  • Frank Wuerthwein (Faculty)

Advanced Network and Distributed Storage Laboratory

This project ended in 2012. See here for details.

  • Haifeng Pi (Researcher)
  • Igor Sfiligoi (Computing Staff)
  • Frank Wuerthwein (Faculty)

Physics with CDF

The people (formerly) active on CDF:

  • Rami Vanguri (former undergraduate, now graduate @ UPenn)
  • Shih-Chieh Hsu (former graduate student, now Chamberlain Fellowship to work on Atlas at Berkeley since May 2008)
  • Matt Norman (former graduate student, left for Ebay)
  • Elliot Lipeles (former post-doc, starting faculty job at UPenn on June 1st 2008)
  • Mark Neubauer (former post-doc. Faculty at UIUC since Fall 2007)
  • fkw (faculty)

Bottom line, the CDF effort ended in 2010.
