People unfamiliar with ECAL intercalibration have been surprised by the magnitude of these differences, which are quite large as compared to the photon energy resolution. This can be understood as follows:

  • The error on the crystal intercalibration is a relatively large contribution to the energy resolution - particularly of unconverted photons
  • The intercalibration constants used for the ICHEP dataset were obtained for 2011 using 2011 data (pizeros, phi-symmetry etc), and their errors [1] are largely uncorrelated with those used for the reprocessing and the 53x dataset (these new calibrations were obtained with 2012 data).

The distribution of the mass difference between ICHEP dataset and the 53x dataset (Run2012AB only) for all events (i.e. including endcap events) given below in the table. Selected events with mγγ between 100 and 180 GeV are used. Category definition is that of the ICHEP analysis.
