(Fri April 9th 2010) - Yes Computers Do Use More Power Under Load

UCSD CMS T2 center monitoring includes both the amount of user jobs submitted and running at UCSD as well as the total power being used by the center measured as power output from the room PDU. On Thursday April 8th CMS Production submitted a large number of highly CPU intensive jobs to the UCSD CMS T2 center. Up until that point the UCSD T2 was only running about ~15% of maximum job capacity, mostly analysis jobs. The following images demonstrate clearly how the sudden jump in CPU intensive jobs correlates to a significant increase in total power output from the two room power distribution units.

PDU Power Output Increases

The above graphs show how important it is to consider how much variance there can be in power demand in a T2 and the need to plan accordingly.In thise case the increase in CPU usage was matched with a 17.4% increase in power output from the two PDU, or about 8.7KW.

There is also a relative increase in the cooling demand in the T2 center, though this is more variable as there are other factors involved such as incoming cooling water temperature which fluctuates throughout the day.
